Few know that SNK’s journey to creating KOF started with a failed project called “Survivor.” This prototype fighting game introduced the team battle system but was shelved due to technical limitations.

The development team, led by Takashi Nishiyama, salvaged the team battle concept and perfected it for KOF ’94. Nishiyama’s experience from creating the original Street Fighter proved invaluable – he knew exactly how to balance speed and power to create engaging fights.

While Street Fighter dominated the Western tournament scene, KOF built a passionate following in Latin America and Asia. Mexico, in particular, became a KOF powerhouse. In the back rooms of Mexico City arcades, players developed techniques that wouldn’t be seen in Japan for years. The “Mexicanite” style – aggressive rushing with precise hop timing – became legendary in the KOF community.

Character Relationships and Lore
KOF’s story goes deeper than most fighting games. The Kusanagi-Yagami rivalry isn’t just about fighting – it’s a centuries-old blood feud.
