Look, I’ll admit it – I’m a 35-year-old who still plays Snake. My wife thinks I’m ridiculous, but IDC. This stupid little game about a pixel snake eating dots has been with me since my first Nokia 3310 back in 2000, and I’m not ashamed!

For the maybe 3 people on Earth who don’t know what Snake is: you control a little line (the snake) that moves around the screen. You eat dots to grow longer, and if you hit yourself or a wall, you die. That’s it! Literally the most simple game concept ever, but I swear it’s more addictive than anything with fancy 3D graphics.

My finest Snake moment: 8th grade math class, 2001. Had my Nokia hidden under the desk and hit a new high score. I involuntarily shouted “YES!” and my teacher, Mr. Peterson, confiscated my phone for a MONTH. When he finally gave it back, I saw he’d been trying to beat my score the whole time. He never did. Get rekt, Peterson!

Best LEGIT Free Snake Game Downloads

OK so you want some FREE Snake games that won’t give your computer digital herpes? I gotchu. Here are my personal faves that I’ve actually downloaded and played (way too much):

1. Classic Snake Versions

• spypunk Snake – Open source Java version that’s EXACTLY like the old-school version. Perfect retro vibes and no BS. Just download, unzip, and double-click the .jar file.
• Snake Classic on SourceForge – Another great old-school version, super tiny download (like 5MB) and runs on anything. My go-to when I’m bored at work.
• Microsoft Casual Games’ Snake – Free on the Microsoft Store and it’s actually good? Shocking, I know. Has achievements if you’re into that stuff.

2. Modern Snake Games (but still free!)

• Snake ’97 – For phones. This is my absolute FAV. Looks exactly like a Nokia screen, even has the little phone buttons. The free version has ads but they’re not intrusive.
• Snakeybus – OK so this one goes on sale for free sometimes, otherwise it’s like $5. But it’s SNAKE WITH BUSES IN 3D and it’s ridiculous and amazing.
• Slither.io – Browser-based multiplayer snake. Kinda like an MMO snake game? I’ve lost entire weekends to this. No download needed, just play in your browser!

MY SNAKE HACK: Most of these games have keyboard shortcuts. In most versions, try pressing P for pause, R for restart, and Space to speed up. Saved my butt in many marathon Snake sessions when I needed a bathroom break!

Make Your Own Snake Game (I did it!)

So a couple years ago during lockdown, I was SUPER bored and decided to learn how to code by making my own Snake game. Turns out it’s actually one of the easiest games to build yourself!

If you want to try making your own, here are the resources I used:

• Coding Snake in 5 Minutes – YouTube tutorial that explains the basics super well.
• JavaSnake on GitHub – Full source code you can download and tinker with. This is how I learned!
• p5.js – If you want to make a browser version, this JavaScript library makes it stupid easy.

When I finished my first Snake game, I added a custom feature where the snake turns rainbow colors when you hit a certain length. My nephew thought this was the coolest thing ever and told all his friends I was a “professional game developer.” I didn’t correct him. Sometimes being the cool uncle is more important than the truth. 😎

Warning: Snake Game Scams (For Real)

OK this sounds ridiculous but there are ACTUALLY sketchy Snake game downloads out there. I know because my cousin downloaded “Super Snake 3D” from some random site and ended up with ransomware. For a SNAKE GAME. What is wrong with people?

Avoid these red flags:

• Snake games that are mysteriously like 300MB in size (the game should be tiny!)
• Downloads that require you to disable your antivirus (NOPE!)
• Sites that make you complete a survey before downloading
• Any snake game that asks for weird permissions (why would Snake need your contacts???)

Stick to trusted sources like GitHub, SourceForge, Steam, or official app stores!

• Slither.io: 23,487 points (my absolute peak, will never beat this)

Why Snake Games Are Perfect

OK hear me out – Snake might be the perfect video game and here’s why:

• Stupid simple to learn – My 4-year-old niece picked it up in 2 minutes
• Hard to master – I’m still getting better after 20+ years
• No tutorials needed – When’s the last time you played a game without a 30-minute tutorial?
• Works on ANYTHING – I’ve played Snake on phones, calculators, smartwatches, and even those little key fob games
• Strangely meditative – Something about the rhythm gets me into a flow state
• No microtransactions! – $500 snake skins aren’t a thing (yet… don’t get ideas, EA)

Last month I was stuck at the airport with a dead phone and found a Snake game hidden in the seat-back entertainment system. Played for the entire 4-hour flight. The flight attendant said I was the first person she’d ever seen actually use that feature. I felt simultaneously proud and pathetic.
